About

An independent one-person studio.

Northlight LLC provides software development, application hosting, and IT consulting services. Everything is done by the same engineer, which is a deliberate constraint rather than a stage the company is trying to grow out of.

Why one person

Most of what goes wrong in a software project goes wrong in a handover: between the person who sold it and the person who built it, or between the person who built it and the person who now has to keep it running. A one-person studio removes those seams by not having them.

It also sets an honest limit. The studio takes on work it can finish properly and says no to the rest — which is more useful to you than a yes that turns into a queue.

Northlight is a Wyoming limited liability company with its registered office in Sheridan. Work is done remotely with clients across time zones, in English or German.

How we work

Proposal, build, operate.

Three stages on every engagement. The shape does not change with the size of the project — only the length of each stage does.

Stage 01

Proposal

We start with a conversation and end it with a document. The proposal states what will be built, what it costs, when it lands and what is explicitly not included.

If the scope is still fuzzy, we narrow it down together first. A price quoted over a vague scope helps nobody: it is either padded against risk or about to be revised.

Stage 02

Build

Work arrives in increments you can look at and react to, rather than as a single reveal at the end. Changing your mind early is cheap, and this is the stage designed for it.

Scope changes are re-quoted in writing. Nothing gets absorbed silently and then reappears later as a delay.

Stage 03

Operate

Software that is live needs someone to keep it live. We deploy it, monitor it, patch it and test that backups actually restore.

Watching the system is our job rather than yours, and the accounts it runs on can stay in your name.

Principles

Four commitments we can be held to.

These are checkable claims rather than values on a wall. If we break one, you will be able to point at it.

One engineer, start to finish

The person who writes your proposal writes the code and answers the support mail. There is no account manager in between, and no junior quietly assigned to the parts nobody wanted.

Written before built

Scope, price and timeline exist in writing before work starts. Changes are re-quoted rather than absorbed. You should never have to reconstruct what was agreed from a chat history.

Boring technology, on purpose

Tools are chosen for how long they stay maintainable. This website is the example we can point at: static HTML, CSS and JavaScript, no framework, no build step, no third-party requests.

Data minimalism

We collect what a job needs and nothing beyond it. Our own product, DayTally, is built to request no Android internet permission at all — that is the standard we aim for, not a marketing line.

Our own product

Launching soon

DayTally

DayTally is a private, fully offline Android app for tracking the days you spend in each country. It is built for tax documentation — the 183-day rule and comparable residency thresholds — and requests no internet permission at all, so your travel history stays on the device until you export it yourself.

It is the studio's first own product and has not been released yet.
